The settlement of S. Egidio, with its characteristic spindle-shaped layout, stretches along the main road, lined with residences, some quite large, belonging to the leading local families. Among them we can single out the two built by the Ferrajoli family. The one in the centre has several juxtaposed storeys and overlooks the valley, its façade characterised by a monumental entrance dominating the street. The other one stands at the far end of the village, next to the church of S. Maria; its broad façade, to a simple and functional design and sobrely decorated with incised plasterwork, closes off the approach and dominates the main square. In the spacious courtyard, with a central loggia leading into the garden and rooms on the upper storeys, there are some ancient relics, including Roman epigraphs and altars found on the territory of S. Egidio. |
